It is a colorful and you can take beautiful pictures. Look at how many people have different hairstyles, sometimes rasta, sometimes curls, the strangest tails … And very special it is to see how people cherish their pigs. From outside the cabins small eyes, but inside is it with you. Hopefully you are lucky you can look somewhere inside. The cabins have two “floors”. Day 9 Pork Feast
The most beautiful excursion to make in the Baliem Valley, attending a pig feast. The villagers of the Dani tribe be informed in advance and buy a pig. You go in the morning by bus to the village where the show will take place. If you get out, the first thing you see a Papuan who climbs a pole. He yells. From the vegetation are all Papuan men in traditional dress (so with penis sheath and feathers) appear. They perform a mock fight with spears. Very impressive to see and hear their wild cries! Then they sing a song to welcome you. Their loud cries and simple dance steps are great to experience. Then you are guided by their singing lured into the village. As the women wait, even in traditional clothing (grass skirts). Some men have their faces smeared with white, red or black colors. They wear beautiful headdresses with feathers. Others have a pig stand by their nose. Some women also have their skin painted. All in all, the pig feast very much photogenic moments. You can extend people and trouble shooting. There is much to see, that you hardly know where to look!
The men and women dance together and then the slain pig with bow and arrow. There is a fire and stones and the pig on the fire. Here the meat is just browned. The red-hot stones are placed in a pit. Here are top of vegetables, sweet potatoes, lots of greenery and the pig. Everything is well covered up and you let the meat simmer for about an hour.
In that time you can eat your lunch and go sightseeing in the village. After a while the food is cooked. First get the guests and the man meat. What remains and the vegetables and potatoes for the women and children.
This is a unique opportunity to spend a day with the Papuans to spend and a good impression of their lives. It also offers a unique opportunity to take pictures of people in their traditional attire.
This is definitely our favorite excursion in the Baliem Valley!
Day 10 Rafting on the Baliemrivier
After breakfast, the car from the hotel ready for you. You are again first in the valley, towards Wamena. Then drive north to the Assologaima region. The car with the big raftboot on the roof runs down to the banks of the Baliemrivier. Here are handed out life jackets and instructions. You’re ready for a different adventure! The boat drifts downstream to the bridge of Wesaput. It is especially a nice ride, it’s not spectacular in terms of rapids. You will pass through areas where no roads or paths and can thus enjoy the pure nature. But nature is interspersed with the akkertjes of the Dani tribe. They grow sweet potatoes, taro and sugar cane. And whenever you see the circular huts of the Dani people under shady acacia trees on the side of the river. Occasionally, a small rapids in the river. This is very dependent on the state of the water in the river and this is difficult to predict. But the journey is for everyone to do well and is a fun excursion on the water as an alternation between the walks and car trips in. Way, you see how Dani women sweet potatoes they have harvested, washed in the river. One part is for own consumption (sweet potatoes are the main food for Dani) and some is brought to market in Wamena to sell. People wash themselves and their clothes in the river. The natives paddle themselves on the water in narrow wooden canoes, which are made from a tree. Along the way you construct to enjoy a picnic lunch.

40 minute flight back to Jayapura. Upon arrival in Jayapura will be picked up by your guide and driver for a sightseeing tour to Jayapura and environment.
The airport of Jayapura lies well outside the city, actually in the town of Sentani. From the airport, drive through the city Sentani, a high hill. It seems a little weird, but you go on a military base. Here is the MacArthur Memorial. General MacArthur the Allied forces captured Jayapura on the Japanese during World War II. The monument is simple, but the view over the city Sentani, the airport, Sentanimeer and the surrounding hills is magnificent: a gorgeous photo stop! You drive the valley again and follow the road along the Sentanimeer.
Get on board a motorized canoe to an island in the Sentanimeer to sail. Here you can walk around and see the houses on stilts in the water. The islands here are known for their bark paintings. A nice souvenir.
You sail Yougwa to the restaurant for lunch. Here you have delicious fresh fish. And the view of the lake is beautiful!
Then go to the Museum of Cendrawasih University in Abepura. A small but nice museum with a special collection from all parts of Irian Jaya. Lots of images, large shields, penis sheaths and several other details from the cultures of Irian Jaya are shown.
If there is time enough, you can still just turn to the village of Hamadi. Here are some souvenir shops and a fish market.
Otherwise, skip to Jayapura. This is a busy, cluttered, typical Indonesian town. The Dutch founded the city in 1910 Hollandia. Hollandia is the current Jayapura. In the Second World War in this area of heavy fighting.
